About Grains
by Wild Oat's Guide 10/25/2005 11:31
Whole grains - the seeds and friuits of cereal grasses - are packed with energy. They supply the nutrients your body needs to properly digest and assimilate their goodness. Most processed grains are stripped of their nutritious outer layers (the bran and sometimes the germ) removing most of the key nutrients, such as vitamin E, protein and fiber. What remains is the starchy inside, lacking flavor and texture.
Variety is the spice of life! Adding whole grains to your diet is good for the body and soul. many people experience food allergies and sensitivities to wheat and corn. However there is so much more to choose from - amaranth, quinoa, buckwheat, barley, cous cous, kamut, just to name few.
Base your day's energy on delightful, long-burning energy of morning whole grain cereal. Experiment with different whole-grain cereals.
Soak grains overnight. In the morning, cook them in their soaking water for 50 minutes or pressure cook 20 minutes. Or drain soaking water and cook in fruit juices, or soy milk. Add dried or fresh fruits, like raisins, apples or bananas. Cook with sweet spices, like cinnamon, ginger or allspice. Top with honey if you wish and enjoy the long lasting sweet energy!
